The Role

As Circle scales rapidly, our infrastructure must scale with it. We’re hiring a Senior Back-End Engineer (Rails) to join the Infrastructure Team, responsible for keeping Circle’s platform modern, fast, and reliable.

You’ll take ownership of our Rails stack, drive major architectural improvements, and build internal tools that empower our developers. This role is ideal for someone who loves optimizing systems, reducing complexity, and building long-term technical leverage for a growing product used by millions.

What You’ll Do

• Maintain and modernize Circle’s Ruby on Rails stack for performance, reliability, and security.

• Build internal tools, SDKs, and libraries that improve developer experience and scalability.

• Partner with frontend engineers and SREs to enhance observability and infrastructure performance.

• Identify opportunities to replace third-party dependencies with efficient in-house solutions.

• Contribute to key architectural decisions that ensure the platform’s long-term efficiency.

• Optimize databases (MySQL/Postgres) and core backend systems for scale and cost-effectiveness.

What You’ll Bring

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in infrastructure or platform teams.

• Deep expertise in Ruby on Rails, with experience optimizing for performance and scale.

• Strong experience with MySQL/Postgres and backend architecture.

• Proven track record improving system reliability and reducing technical debt.

• Comfort working autonomously in a fully remote, fast-moving environment.

• Excellent written and spoken English (CEFR C2 / ILR 5).

• Bonus:

• Experience scaling systems to 1M+ monthly active users.

• Prior experience with React or frontend collaboration.

• Built SDKs, internal tools, or cost-optimization systems.

Compensation & Benefits

💰 $130,000 – $140,000 USD + equity
